Fishing in the District

Striped bass (rockfish) season opens May 16.
The striped bass (rockfish) fishing season opens in the District on May 16. The 2009 striped bass season runs from May 16 - December 31.  The striped bass possession limit is 2 fish per person, 18” minimum with only 1 fish over 28”.

Free fishing days in the District.
Free fishing days in the District of Columbia for 2009 are June 6-7 and June 13-14.  No fishing license will be required to fish in District waters on these days.  These dates overlap with National Fishing and Boating Week, which begins on June 6th and ends on June 14th.

Angler Information Network
The Fisheries and Wildlife Division works closely with the District's anglers to obtain and distribute information about the state of local aquatic ecosystems. Anglers are an important link in the monitoring of area rivers. Their observations often provide information about aquatic systems. The Fisheries and Wildlife Division actively seeks this information by conducting annual angler surveys and keeping open communications with local sports fishermen. Additionally, several new resources are offered to anglers, such as a new Fishing Report Hotline, Citation Awards for those great catches, and a Geographic Information System map of hot fishing spots. By maintaining open communications, anglers and the Fisheries and Wildlife Division can work together to protect our valuable resource.
